The Bobbsie Twins and the mystery women: Story 1

About 36 years ago, oh my that was long ago, I had a best friend named Toni. We were inseparable, and we were constantly up to something. Despite the fact that she had dark hair and brown eyes, while I was very blond with blue eyes, we some how acquired the nick name as the Bobbsie Twins. The grown ups would see us and say, "There's the Bobbsie twins." I never was able to make the connection since the Bobbsie twins were practically identical, but our Band Teacher, Mr. Bowring, explained to us one day that it was because we always had a mystery to solve, or we were creating some kind of scheme to accomplish or who knows what. For instance; Poor Mr. Harvey, who happened to get side winded into one of our little mischievous games. Toni and I decided that since he was extra friendly to all the young girls, and we didn't like it, we were going to see just how far he would go if a women really liked him. So it was we invented her. We found the most beautiful Model in a magazine and took it to school with us. She wore the most in style cloths, had beautiful hair and eyes, wow, she was beautiful. Then we had to give her a name and since I always loved my Grandma Low's last name we named her Sherri McKim.
Excitedly we hurried off to school with the picture of Sherri. Toni and I ran to Mr. Harvey and told him that we had been telling a cousin of mine about our favorite and most awesome teacher. She, this cousin, really wanted to meet him. We told him about how she was a model and very beautiful as well. "mmm," he gave this some thought. After school, Mr. Harvey called Toni and I to his desk and told us that he would love to meet this lovely lady.
Toni and I were so shocked, we didn't think he would actually want to talk to her. We looked at each other for a moment then, finally, I told him that we would have to call her first and see what she said. So Toni and I ran to my house where we thought and thought of what we were going to do next. We certainly couldn't let Mr. Harvey know we had made this all up.
So I came up with a plan. "We will tell Mr. Harvey that she will call him at his home." Feeling rather proud of ourselves for figuring this one out, we went our separate ways until school the next day.
The next morning we were feeling quite cheerful and proud of our ability to actually get Mr. Harvey to believe all this. Then during class I went to Mr. Harvey's desk pretending that I needed help with my assignment. After I made it to his desk, I told him that Sherri would be writing to him soon and maybe she would call him too. He asked me why. It was then Toni joined me and we began explaining that Sherri wanted to call him. We continued to explain that she was much to busy for him to call her, since she never knew where she would be. Being a model was very time consuming. Wow! Toni and I went back to our desk as we continued our conspiracy plan. We decided we had to call him, or rather Sherri should call him. He knows our voices. We pondered for a moment and Toni helped me realize that I was good at disguising my voice. Thinking back on it now, I think what she was really saying is that she didn't want to do it, so she passed the buck to me.
Hesitantly I agreed to make the call, but now we had to decide where to call from. We certainly couldn't call from our houses.
We finally decided we could use the phone at the library. That poor Liberian must have really wondered about us. We asked for the phone book so we could look Mr. Harvey's number up, and used the phone faithfully for the next four days. Toni and I went to the library everyday after school and waited until the time Mr. Harvey would be home. Then we made our call alluring him to Sherri Mckim, the beautiful model.
For the next week or so we took a couple of letters from Sherri to Mr. Harvey. He would just sigh as he accepted the letters from us, and then we watched while he read them.
Well the day finally came - we figured we had gone to far, it was time for Sherri to break up with Mr. Harvey. He was wanting her to come to Blanding and visit him. So needles to say, the last phone call was made as Sherri announced the break up.
To make a long story short, Mr. Harvey didn't really like us after that. Being older I realize that it wasn't so much that we had him convinced, probably not from day one of our little conspiracy, but because we were such brats. I wonder if he went along for so long just to see how far we would actually go. Poor Mr. Harvey. However, from our stand point, we didn't like some of the things he did so he deserved it.
Oh, and by the way, the Bobbsie Twins were created back in the early 1900's and became a series of books. The twins in the story were constantly up to something, a mystery, or an adventure. That was definitely Toni and I.
